Esports betting covers competitive video games played by professional teams: tactical shooters, multiplayer battle arenas and others. The games differ, but the betting markets follow a common structure built around series formats. A best-of-three behaves very differently from a single map, and that difference is worth understanding before you look at any price. This guide explains the markets, shows with numbers how series length shifts the odds, and covers the settlement quirks unique to esports.
How esports matches are structured
Most professional matches are series: best-of-one, best-of-three or best-of-five maps (or games). In a best-of-three, the first team to win two maps takes the match. Within each map there may be rounds, kills or objectives that feed into more detailed markets. Tournaments run in group stages and playoffs, often with different series lengths at each stage.
Because the format is fixed in advance, you can work out how a team's chance of winning a single map turns into its chance of winning the series. That is one of the few places in betting where a clean bit of arithmetic is genuinely helpful.
Series length in numbers
Suppose, hypothetically, Team A wins any single map 60% of the time. In a best-of-one, they win the match 60% of the time. In a best-of-three, they win by taking two maps before Team B does: 0.6 × 0.6 for a 2-0, plus two routes to 2-1, each 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.6. That adds up to 36% + 28.8% = 64.8%. In a best-of-five the figure rises to about 68%.
The cause and effect: longer series reward the stronger team, because a single bad map matters less. So the same favourite should be shorter-priced in a best-of-five than in a best-of-one. If prices do not reflect that, the bookmaker may simply have a different view of single-map strength.
| Format | Team A wins (60% per map) | Fair decimal odds |
|---|---|---|
| Best-of-one | 60.0% | 1.67 |
| Best-of-three | 64.8% | 1.54 |
| Best-of-five | 68.3% | 1.46 |
Common esports markets
Match winner is the headline. Map handicap gives one team a head start in maps, so Team A -1.5 needs a 2-0 win in a best-of-three. In our example, that is 36%, or fair odds around 2.78. Total maps over 2.5 in a best-of-three needs a 2-1 result either way, which in our example is 1 minus the two clean sweeps (36% + 16%), so 48%. Correct score markets list each exact series result.
Game-specific markets such as first blood, total rounds or total kills exist for some titles. They depend on each game's rules, and they can be volatile. Read the market description before betting on one for the first time.
Settlement quirks
Esports has issues traditional sport does not: technical pauses, game remakes after bugs, forfeits and late roster substitutions. Sportsbooks have rules for each, such as voiding bets if a match is not played in full or if the format changes. Patches can alter which strategies are strong, and form from before a big update may mean less afterwards. Check the sportsbook's esports rules, and keep stakes to a fixed unit as described in our unit betting post.
