Sic Bo is a dice game with a crowded betting layout. Three dice are shaken in a covered bowl or machine, and dozens of bets settle on the result: high or low, the total, doubles, triples and pairs of numbers. The layout can look intimidating, but it is all built on one fact: three six-sided dice produce 216 equally likely outcomes. Once you can count those outcomes, every bet's value becomes clear. This guide does that counting for you.
Counting the 216 outcomes
Each die has six faces, so three dice give 6 times 6 times 6, or 216 combinations. Totals range from 3 to 18. Middle totals such as 10 and 11 can be made in 27 ways each, while 3 and 18 can each be made in only one way. That is why the payout for a total of 4 is much bigger than the payout for a total of 10.
There are six "triples" (three of the same number), each with 1 chance in 216. Any triple, meaning you do not care which number, is 6 in 216, or about 2.8%.
Common bets and their chances
The table shows popular bets with their true chance and typical payouts. Live tables do not all use the same payouts, and that difference is the most important thing to check.
| Bet | Wins when | Chance | Typical payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Total 4 to 10, not a triple | 105 in 216 (48.6%) | 1 to 1 |
| Big | Total 11 to 17, not a triple | 105 in 216 (48.6%) | 1 to 1 |
| Any triple | All three dice match | 6 in 216 (2.8%) | Often 30 to 1 |
| Specific triple | Three of one chosen number | 1 in 216 (0.5%) | Often 150 to 1 or more |
| Total of 10 or 11 | Dice add to that total | 27 in 216 (12.5%) | Often 6 to 1 |
Why triples beat Big and Small
Big and Small would be fair at even money if triples did not exist. Each covers half of the 210 non-triple results. The six triples, which make both bets lose, are the house's margin: 6 in 216, about 2.8% of stakes in the long run.
Take a hypothetical ৳100 on Small for 216 rounds, an idealised run where every outcome appears exactly once. You win 105 times (+৳10,500) and lose 111 times (-৳11,100), a net of -৳600 on ৳21,600 staked. Now try a total of 4 at an assumed 60 to 1: it can be made 3 ways, so you win 3 times (+৳18,000) and lose 213 times (-৳21,300), a net of -৳3,300 on the same staking. Bigger payout, much bigger cost. Payouts on real tables may differ, which is exactly why the arithmetic is worth doing with the table's own numbers.
Live versions and features
Some live Sic Bo games add random multipliers to certain bets each round. To fund those boosts, the base payouts are usually lowered, so a multiplier table is not automatically better value. Rounds are quick, often under a minute, so the same budget can disappear faster than you expect. Our cost-per-hour explainer shows how pace and edge combine.
