Baccarat is often described as a game of pure chance, and it is, but that does not mean its numbers are mysterious. Every probability in the game can be worked out from the cards and the fixed drawing rules. Knowing them helps you see which bets are cheap, which are expensive, and how unremarkable a "streak" really is. This post sets out baccarat probability in plain numbers for a standard eight-deck shoe, from the main bets to naturals, pairs and runs.
The three main outcomes
With eight decks and standard drawing rules, the long-run frequencies are well established. Ties are common enough to matter: almost one hand in ten. If you set ties aside, Banker wins about 50.7% of the decided hands and Player about 49.3%. That small gap is the whole reason Banker wins are charged commission.
| Outcome | Chance per hand | Chance excluding ties | Long-run cost of betting it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.86% | 50.68% | About 1.06% (5% commission) |
| Player | 44.62% | 49.32% | About 1.24% |
| Tie | 9.52% | n/a | About 14.4% at 8 to 1 |
Where the costs come from
For Player, the cost is simple: you win 44.62% of the time and lose 45.86%, with ties pushing. Per ৳100 staked, you gain ৳44.62 and lose ৳45.86 on average, a net −৳1.24. For Banker, you win 45.86% but are paid only ৳95 per ৳100 because of commission, so you gain about ৳43.57 and lose ৳44.62, a net of about −৳1.06.
For Tie at 8 to 1, you win ৳800 9.52% of the time (about ৳76.2) and lose ৳100 the other 90.48% (about ৳90.5), a net of roughly −৳14.4 per ৳100. That is more than ten times the cost of Banker. Some tables pay 9 to 1 on a tie, which lowers the cost to about 4.8%, still far above the main bets.
Naturals and pairs
A natural is a two-card total of 8 or 9, which ends the hand immediately. For either side, the chance of a natural is close to 19%, or about one hand in five, because so many cards count as zero. The chance that at least one side has a natural is roughly a third.
Pair side bets pay when a side's first two cards are the same rank. With 416 cards in eight decks and 32 of each rank, after the first card, 31 of the remaining 415 match, so the chance is about 7.47%. At a typical 11 to 1 payout, the expected return per ৳100 is 7.47% × ৳1,200, about ৳89.6, a cost of about 10.4%. Side bet payouts vary between tables, so recompute with the table's own numbers.
Streaks are normal
Scorecards make streaks look dramatic. But with Banker winning about 50.7% of decided hands, five Banker wins in a row (ignoring ties) happens with a chance of about 3.4% from any given starting point. In a shoe of around 70 to 80 hands, the chance of seeing at least one run of five or more on one side or the other is high, well above even odds. Runs of six, seven or eight appear regularly over an evening.
None of this means a run will continue or end. Each hand is dealt from the remaining shoe, and the effect of removed cards on the next hand is too small to use. Our gambler's fallacy post explains why our brains see patterns in this kind of randomness.
- Banker five in a row, from a given start: about 3.4%.
- Natural for one side: about 19% per hand.
- Pair on one side's first two cards: about 7.5%.
- Tie: about 9.5% per hand.
Using the numbers
If you play baccarat, these figures point to a straightforward approach: stick mainly to Banker or Player, keep side bets small or skip them, and set a stake as a fixed share of your session budget. Our baccarat rules guide explains the game on PJOK, and the cost-per-hour post shows how pace multiplies these percentages into Taka. Tables and payouts vary, so always read the info panel.
Three steps
How to use baccarat probability in 3 steps
- 1Check the payouts
Open the table's info panel on PJOK and note the commission and the Tie and pair payouts.
- 2Compare the costs
Use the percentages above, adjusted for the table's payouts, to see which bets are cheapest.
- 3Ignore the scorecard
Place your fixed stake on your chosen bet without changing it because of recent streaks.
